Llandovery Theatre

A Brief History of Llandovery Theatre

In 1975, two actors, Simon Barnes and Jaqueline Harrison, stumbled across a derelict building in the Welsh town of Llandovery, and from this grew the dream of building a Theatre and creating the Llandovery Theatre Company.

Llandovery was a Roman town called “Alabum”. Who is to say that in years past the Roman soldiers, tired from their work of ferrying gold down to Carmarthen, did not walk down towards Stone Street, for a Saturday night on the town! What is known about the theatre building is that it was once a Drovers court, and later, in the 19th century, the British school.

When rediscovered the building was totally derelict, and it took until 1996 to finally complete the renovations, and to install central heating, though work and performances have continued throughout.

The Llandovery Theatre Company directors have produced over 100 new plays and scripts, directed countless performances and worked with professional and community actors, and hundreds of children, since 1975.

Supported by professional colleagues including Ken Campbell, Trader Faulkner, Cyril and Violet Luckham, Sylvia Syms, Charmian Eyre, Harvey Andrews and Jeffry Wickham, this “little acorn”, set in the shadow of the Black Mountains, has become a sturdy oak.
